AIO-6 Doesn't Power On With USB-C? How To test AIO-6 Pre-Instal With USB - Explained

You just unboxed your new AIO-6 and want to fire it up at home right away – check the display, update the firmware, poke around the settings. You grab a charger with a USB-C → USB-C cable, plug it in, and... nothing happens. Don't worry – the device isn't broken. It just wasn't designed to be powered via USB-C the way you charge your phone.

⚠️ Heads up – the USB-C port is a diagnostic port

Unless it's absolutely necessary – don't power your AIO-6 over USB. Just hardwire the device to your motorcycle's battery.

The USB-C port on the side of the AIO-6 is meant for firmware updates, initial setup, and diagnostics. Only battery power guarantees full functionality (camera, GPS, 4G) and waterproofing – the rubber port cover needs to stay closed during riding.

This guide is only for you if you want to test the device at your desk or update the firmware before installing it on your bike.

What you need to power the AIO-6 via USB-C

  • A USB-A → USB-C cable – the big rectangular plug on one end, the small USB-C plug on the other
  • A 5V / 2A charger – an old phone charger, a USB-A port on your laptop, or a power bank with a USB-A output

That's it. The simplest 5V/2A charger works best. You don't need a PD charger, GaN, or fast charging.

What NOT to use to power the AIO-6

This is where most of our support tickets come from:

  • ❌ A USB-C → USB-C cable – it won't work, no matter how good your charger is
  • ❌ Modern USB-C PD / GaN chargers (Anker, MacBook charger, fast chargers from Samsung/Apple)
  • Power banks with only a USB-C output
  • ❌ A MacBook or Mac mini through its USB-C port
USB-A to USB-C cable (correct) vs USB-C to USB-C cable (won't work) for CHIGEE AIO-6

How to power on the AIO-6 via USB-C – step by step

🚫 DO NOT plug the cable into the port on the back of the device

The port on the back of the AIO-6 is the main wiring harness connector – it's strictly for connecting to your motorcycle's battery and doesn't support USB power. Only use the USB-C port under the rubber cover on the right-hand side, next to the SD card slot.

  1. Connect a USB-A → USB-C cable to a 5V/2A charger (or to a USB-A port on your laptop or power bank)
  2. Open the rubber port cover on the right-hand side of the AIO-6
  3. Plug the USB-C end into the device
  4. The AIO-6 should boot up within a few seconds

The camera, GPS, and 4G module may behave unstably on USB power – this is normal and not a sign of a fault. Full functionality requires battery power.

What to do if the AIO-6 won't turn on

In order from the most common causes:

  1. Swap the cable. Cheap cables often only carry power, no data lines. Use a quality cable, ideally an original one that came with a phone from a known brand.
  2. Try a weaker charger. Counterintuitive, but true. An old 5W iPhone charger or a regular USB-A laptop port often works better than a 65W GaN brick.
  3. Take out the SD card and try again – a corrupted card can sometimes block the boot.

If the device turns on but shuts off, shows a black screen, or restarts shortly after – USB power isn't enough. Hardwire it to the battery.

Why a USB-C → USB-C cable doesn't work

The USB-C port on the AIO-6 is a diagnostic port, not a fully-fledged power port. The USB-C standard requires the device and the charger to "shake hands" through dedicated CC (Configuration Channel) pins – agreeing on how many volts and amps will flow. The diagnostic port on the AIO-6 doesn't have the circuitry needed for that negotiation, so a modern USB-C charger won't supply any voltage at all – from its perspective, nothing is plugged in.

A USB-A → USB-C cable works because a USB-A port supplies 5V "as-is", without any negotiation – just like a phone charger from ten years ago. That's more than enough to boot up the AIO-6 for testing purposes.

ℹ️ This also affects other CHIGEE models

The same behavior applies to the AIO-5 Play for BMW and the AIO-5 EVO. The exception is the AIO-5 Play – the only CHIGEE model designed to be powered over USB. The AIO-5 Play box includes an extra, dedicated cable that actually works over USB as a daily power source.

Ready to install the AIO-6 on your bike?

If you tested the AIO-6 at your desk and everything works – it's time for the proper installation. Keep in mind that the USB-C port isn't suited for riding: no waterproofing and not enough power.
